Asbestos is the name given to any of several minerals (such as chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite) that readily separate into long flexible fibers, that have been implicated as causes of certain cancers, and that have been used especially formerly as fireproof insulating materials.
Asbestos has the properties of high tensile strength, chemical and thermal stability, high flexibility, low electrical conductivity, and large surface area. Because of these properties, asbestos has been used in a variety of products to provide acoustic insulation, thermal insulation, and fire proofing. Other common uses have been in building materials used for roofing and flooring.
Today, asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard and is highly regulated.
